General

What is the Rogue Owners Group?

The Rogue Owners Group is a group of people that own Rogues and use this website and forum for talking about their Rogues and pretty much anything else that strikes their fancy.

What is a Rogue?

The Rogue is a Kawasaki Vulcan 2000 motorcycle. To know how it got the name Rogue, please read this article: How the Rogue Got Its Name.

Group Communication

What are my options for communicating with the Rogue Owners Group?

We currently offer a subscriber based mailing list and a newsgroup.

Why is there not a web-based forum?

Good Question. At the time we started this group, most of the members were used to and preferred the newsgroup and mailing list of VROC, which had no web-based forum at that time. We are currently looking at adding a web-based forum which will integrate with the newsgroup and mailing list so all forms of communication will be synchronized with one another.

Is there any difference between the two options?

Other than how you connect, there is no difference. A post on the newsgroup is replicated to the mailing list and vice-versa. Both lists are kept in synchronization.

How do I subscribe/unsubscribe to/from the mailing list?

To subscribe to the mailing list, you send an email to mailinglist@RogueOwnersGroup.com with SUBSCRIBE as the only word in the subject line. To unsubscribe from the mailing list, send an email to mailinglist@RogueOwnersGroup with UNSUBSCRIBE as the only word in the subject line. Make sure you do this from the email address you want to subscribe or unsubscribe.

How do I connect to the newsgroup server?

You may use any NNTP news reader and go to news://RogueOwnersGroup.com/local.VulcanOwners.Rogue. Outlook Express, for example, has a newsreader and there are many freely available newsreaders on the Internet from which you may choose.

What are the Pros and Cons of each method?

With the mailing list, you receive an email for each and every post in real-time. However, if you don't like receiving emails frequently throughout the day, you may not like this method. The newsgroup reader is a separate application from email and you'll be able to connect and read the messages when you want to do so and won't be sent messages throughout the day. However, this method requires that you manually connect and view the messages.

Is there an etiquette I'm expected to follow while communicating to the group?

Of course. Just like any human-to-human conversation, etiquette should be considered. Just because we're all sitting at a computer and we have a lot of distance between us doesn't mean that we should behave any worse than when we're standing in front of each other. Consider this forum of communication to be like going to your local bar. You're going to see and hear a lot of things in a bar that just might make you mad. But, unless you're a hothead and just want to fight, you tend to leave it alone or blow it off. You should do that here as well. Also, consider the fact that email does not relay the emotions or intent of the writer very well. Face-to-face we can see the body language and the grin of the speaker to know he was joking. We can't always figure that out in an email. It's safer to assume that a person is joking with you when you take offense to his email rather than just assume he's trying to piss you off. Wait until you know he's being a jerk first before going off on him. As a matter of fact, the quickest way to win at this type of conversation is to stop talking to the offender and he'll stop too.

Is there an archive of past messages?

Yes. The newsgroup server has all of the messages that have been posted. It's a good idea to go back and read the old posts for your edification. A lot of messages and useful information has been posted and many of your questions will be answered just by looking through the old posts. Simply go to news://RogueOwnersGroup.com/local.VulcanOwners.Rogue to view the messages. You may need to tell your new reader to retrieve all of the news messages so you can get all of the messages since inception.

Mailing List

Am I subscribed to the mailing list automatically?

No. You must manually sign up for the mailing list. You are not automatically signed up on the mailing list by becoming a member. You can do this by sending an email to mailinglist@RogueOwnersGroup.com with SUBSCRIBE as the only word in the subject line. You will then be sent a confirmation email which you must respond to. Once this process is completed, you'll receive an email for every post to the mailing list or newsgroup. You'll also receive a copy of your own posts.

How many emails can I expect to receive on a daily basis?

It is difficult to say exactly. However, some days you may receive as few as 0 and other days as many as 50 or possibly even more. At the time of this writing, you should expect an average of 20-30 messages or so per day. As the group gets larger, you should expect the number of messages to increase in number.

A lot of folks don't like getting emails from the list. However, if you use a mail client such as Outlook or Outlook Express, it's very easy to create rules which direct messages into folders you choose. You can even have the folder views threaded like a newsgroup reader or a web-based forum. Once you understand how to configure these rules and folder views, you may prefer using email vs. the newsgroup reader because 1) you get messages in real-time, 2) you don't have to manually launch another program to view messages, 3) you're in your email client anyway so it may be more convenient.

If I change my email address in my member profile, does it also change my mailing list email address?

No. The mailing list is separate from the member profile. One does not affect the other.

How do I change my mailing list email address to another email address?

The way you would do this is to subscribe to the mailing list with your new address and then unsubscribe from the mailing address with your old email address.

So, let's say you have address1@domain.com currently subscribed to the mailing list and you now want to use address2@domain.com instead. You would do this by sending an email from your address2@domain.com address to mailinglist@RogueOwnersGroup.com with SUBSCRIBE as the only word in the subject line. You will receive a confirmation email which you must reply to. You would then be subscribed with both email addresses. Then, you would send an email from address1@domain.com to mailinglist@RogueOwnersGroup.com with UNSUBSCRIBE as the only word in the subject line. You will then need to reply to the confirmation email. That's all there is to it.

What if I need to change my email address for the mailing list but my old email address is no longer available?

Send an email to webmaster@RogueOwnersGroup.com and tell him your old email address and the new email address you want it changed to and he can make the change for you.

I don't want to be on the mailing list anymore. How do I remove myself?

Send an email to mailinglist@RogueOwnersGroup.com with the word UNSUBSCRIBE in the subject line. Make sure that UNSUBSCRIBE is the only word in the subject line. You don't need to send anything in the body of the message. You'll then receive a response email asking that your reply to confirm your removal from the list. That's all there is too it.

I see my post but the text is missing. What's wrong? (Google mail users only)

For whatever reason, we're currently having problems with Google Mail not displaying the text of the email when sent to the mailing list. So far it appears to only be a problem with Google Mail. We hope to resolve this problem soon, but until then, Google Mail probably won't work well for you when using the mailing list. You may either use another email account or use the Newsgroup until this problem is resolved.

Newsgroup

What software do I need to read the newsgroup?

There are a lot of options which are free. Outlook Express is one of the more common options since it comes on most Windows-based computers. For other options, check here.
