Windscreen Replacement/Upgrade for Fire & Steel Windshield
Posted 2/7/06 by Michael Berdinsky
It's big, thick, tall, may be just about perfect for riders
over six feet tall. Your friendly equipment reviewer is slightly taller than
5'11, just shy of six feet. While sitting here on my couch, I measure eye level
as being 28 inches or so from the couch seat.

With my Corbin Rumble Seat, the top off the windscreen is at
eye level. If I lean back in the saddle I have to look through the windscreen
to see the road. If I sit up really straight I'm looking over the windscreen
and can see the road from over the top unless cresting a hill. It could be
about an inch shorter for me.

The mounting holes are cut a little larger than necessary,
inserts are supplied that fit the mounting screws tightly within these larger
holes. It was suggested to me that this method helps to avoid chipping around
the holes, but the inserts are a pain to keep in place when removing/replacing
the windscreen. I tried introducing a little rubber cement to make them stick
to something instead of falling on the ground when the mounting screws are
loosened. We'll see if that works.
Very nice finish to it, fits well, seems much stronger than
the original. This last photo shows the size difference between this one and
the original F&S model. I may end up only using it when I am on a longer
road trip with lots of highway miles. My reason for getting it is to avoid
being beat up by high winds on open Interstate highways. I need to test it to
make sure it works well under other circumstances as well. Updates may be
forthcoming.
By the way, to eliminate confusion I suppose that I need to
say that this product is a plexiglass panel only. It mounts to an existing set
of Kawasaki Fire & Steel windscreen brackets.
