Rogue Oil Change
Posted 3/18/06 by Brian Wottle
Oh boy this should bring a variety of opinions, <BG>. When I change my oil
and filter I refill with 5 liters. The oil that I use, Golden Spectro comes
in liter rather than quart bottles. But for the quart using people 5 liters
is 5.3 quarts.
Process;
I take the bike for a ride to warm up the oil, I
then take the two drain plugs under the motor out and let the motor
start draining, this will get most of the oil out. While it's draining I
remove the drain plug under the clutch cover and let it drain. Finally I
remove the oil filter and let that drip what little oil it contains out.
When removing the drain plugs watch for the thin washer on the left side
engine plug and the o-ring that's on the right hand engine plug and
clutch cover plug. If you reinstall the drain plugs with out these or
they're damaged you'll most likely have leaky drain plugs when your
done.
I then set the kickstand on a 4x4 block of wood
to keep the bike mostly level, this allows you to drain all or most
of the oil out of the engine. This works if you have a 2004 with a
stock kickstand, 2005 and newer I couldn't say as the kickstand is a
little different. Once the bike is all drained, about 10 to 15
minutes it will quit dripping oil, I clean the drain plugs, wipe the
drain plug holes and screw them all back in. At this point you
should remove the 4x4 so the bike is sitting back on the floor. It's
safer to have the bike leaning all the way on the kickstand when
tightening or loosening anything from the bike.
I've been following the recommended torque values
in the manual, left drain plug is 11 ft-lbs, the right is 15 ft-lbs
and the clutch drain plug is 15 ft-lbs. I use a torque wrench as I
don't want to strip the threads out. Now coat the new oil filter
o-ring with a little clean motor oil, and then hand tighten it very
tight. Pour all the oil in the bike and your good to go. I was
checking the oil level after a short ride to make sure it was
sufficiently filled, but mine is always Ok at 5 liters.
